What is Onychomycosis?

As the name indicates, the condition is a fungal infection that affects the nail bed and the nail plate; most commonly in the toes but can also occur in the fingers.

Onychomycosis is visualised as a thickened, normally yellow nail that can often be split or crumbly. It is a very common condition affecting 1 in 2 of the population at the age of 70. Onychomycosis is normally associated with a cosmetic condition which lends itself well to laser treatment. If left alone the fungus can:

  • spread from nail to nail
  • cause permanent nail damage
  • become painful
  • result in nail loss

Description

Develop your existing Laser and IPL skills and knowledge with Laser Tattoo Removal and Fungal Nail Infection Treatments. This course will take half a day including practical and theory training.

Different types of lasers have been used to treat these nail plate fungal infections with varying degrees of success. One of the first was long pulse Nd:Yag systems designed to heat the nail bed in an effort to destroy the filaments of fungus. Now we can also use Q switch lasers.

Recent studies published by a team of European researchers describe the use of Q switched lasers which are normally used for laser tattoo removal and laser pigmentation treatments for effective treatment of nail fungus.

Traditional methods of treating fungal nail infections can take a long time and often only work on a topical basis.

Using laser to treat the infection works by increasing the temperature underneath the nail bed which kills the fungi.
